Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops as a Secure / Performant Replacement for Legacy VPN in the Enterprise

The classic combination of legacy VPN and RDP don't make for an ideal user experience for the remote workers of today. Citrix Virtual apps and desktops is faster and more secure alternative to legacy corporate VPNs. This this is due to the "remoting" nature of the industry leading Citrix HDX protocol, where only screen changes and keyboard / mouse inputs are sent to the remote Citrix app / desktop session, this results in a drastic reduction on data transmission for users connecting to a Citrix virtual app or desktop , as processing occurs on the remote virtual session. As well, Citrix virtual apps and desktops via the HDX protocol provides much more granular security controls over end-user devices to support the needs off corporate office and remote workers alike.

Designing and Implementing a 30K+ User, Omnissa Horizon RDSH & VDI Environment with Login VSI Inc.

Very large environments are those that can gain the most value from a virtual app and desktop deployment, benefiting from simplified management, improving ROI, and enhancing end user compute security and compliance. But they can also be the most daunting to design and implement. What if your task was to design and implement a 30,000 user Omnissa Horizon Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH) and Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environment? Where would you start and how would you avoid common pitfalls and obstacles?

In this session, I’ll share how we were able to tackle such a challenge, resulting in tremendous outcomes for this large enterprise customer. Deployments at this scale are truly an act of extreme ownership, teamwork and alignment, between partners, clients, hardware and software vendors. The individuals that worked together as a team, to pull off this deployment were the best and the brightest in the industry! I’m honored to play a pivotal role in the success of this project, to this point and into the future expansion.

I’ll share how we avoided some of the most common Horizon RDSH/VDI design and implementation pitfalls on our journey to delivering mission critical services to 30,000 users. In addition to Omnissa (VMware) technologies, this solution took advantage of NVIDIA GRID vGPU Virtual Apps (vApps) and Virtual PC (vPC), along with IGEL Software-Defined Endpoints. Included will be insights into the entire Omnissa (formerly VMware EUC) technology stack — Instant Clones, App Volumes, Dynamic Environment Manager, Unified Access Gateway and Workspace ONE Access. I’ll also share how we included Hyper-Converged Infrastructure and 1,000+ NVIDIA Tesla GPUs deployed across hundreds of hosts, dozens of clusters and multiple datacenters. The result is an Active-Active, globally load balanced topology delivering impressive performance and availability for this large-scale enterprise organization.

First-ever edge-based Media Optimization of UC Apps for superior UX on VDI Zero & Thin Clients with Nedge Computing

With Nedge’s patented technology, users can now operate Unified Communications (UC) Apps offloaded at the edge for high performance with low maintenance seamlessly from within their existing cloud VDI - Horizon or Anyware - on Windows or Linux. Our approach provides “native” cloud UX without the need for any VDI app plug-ins (which are not even an option on zero client devices).

Nedge’s solutions help offload and optimize VDI remote desktops and end-user devices. MAP is a core future-proof solution to provide continued support for PCoIP devices with Horizon VDI as it moves away from the protocol. MEET, Nedge's flagship application, is the world's first edge-based solution for media optimization of Unified Communications (UC) Apps. It allows Tera2-based devices, Trusted Zero Clients and Thin Client desktops/laptops to operate without any VDI plug-ins!

Important to note: a direct connection from Tera2 to Horizon VDI is not available for Linux hosts (today) and Windows hosts (after 2025). Nedge MAP fixes both these shortcomings, while MEET allows Trusted Zero Clients & Thin Clients running on PCoIP Ultra or Blast Extreme to operate UC Apps without any VDI plug-ins.

Virtual Desktops, GPUs, and Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do

Many think all you can do with virtual desktops and GPUs is graphics. Crate a CAD drawing here, stream some content there, and maybe sneak in a video game here and there. Be prepared to move outside this comfort zone of traditional VDI graphics with Tony Foster, AKA the Wondernerd. He will take you on a journey, exploring other things you can do with VDI and GPUs. We’ll of course look at buzzwords like AI and Machine Learning. Then, we’ll explore more practical applications and look at best practices for architecting and configuring these workloads. This ain’t your grandpa’s VDI…
